Period Meets Contemporary

Case Study - 01

Having worked with my clients, based overseas, on their bolthole apartment in south Dublin some years ago, I was asked to once again work with them on their newly acquired south east Dublin victorian home with a view to working on a full renovation, extension to existing house and a new build mews at the rear.  In collaboration with Bright Design Architects,  I worked  from pre-planning stage through to completion over a 2 year period. Coming on board so early into the project facilitated a great working relationship with all concerned.

The brief.

The brief : Create a luxurious, opulent, inviting home, while paying due respect and attention to the period of the existing house. The interior finish of the extended area and mews building to be in a contemporary style reflecting the new build.  A wine room was essential as was a gym and sauna. My clients have not only travelled the world, they have lived in many different locations, exposed to multiple cultures and influences. This set the tone for a very high level of expectation. Ireland was going to have to turn up!

The Execution

With clients living overseas virtual moodboards and weekly Zoom meetings were the order of the day.  Having worked on a previous project with my clients we were well practiced in communicating from a distance.  Visits to showrooms were arranged to coincide with their return visits to Dublin and a scheme gradually developed.  Once our quality providers were nominated we set about placing orders based on earlier electronic moodboards developed over many months.  The use of Crittal style interior doors created the first step towards transitioning from period to contemporary, from front to back and completing the contemporary look with anodized aluminium framing of windows and automated sliding doors.  The particular period of each area informed our choice of window dressings throughout. The design, quality and craftsmanship of the occasional and fitted furniture completed the high end finish of the entire project.
